Why Body Weight Exercise Rocks!

Why Body Weight Exercise Rocks!

Body weight exercises rock because they do so many things at once, and that makes a body weight workout super efficient!  And forget it all being about burpees, school nightmares anyone? 😉 The workout design of today has got so much more inventive and creative.

Body weight strength

What Exactly is Body Weight Training?

A body weight exercise uses the resistance generated by the body against gravity to develop all round fitness and strength. It is incredibly adaptable so everybody no matter how young or old or fit or not, can do some sort of body weight exercise. Progressions can be done with almost every exercise you can think of and that makes the workouts accessible to all.

Great in So Many Ways

There are a lot of benefits using body weight and, although here at RISE fitness we love our Y Bells and slam balls, it is the use of body weight exercises within workouts that really bring that strength element to the fore.

More than ever people are realising that being strong (not bulky) is a great way to be.  It is especially important for women to keep strong and not to fall into the trap of thinking that cardio is the be all and end all of exercising.

When you use body weight exercises as part of your regular routine the positive effect on the joints, tendons and muscles progress in harmony.  What does that mean?  It means that your body is getting stronger in a balanced way; there is no strain happening where muscles start to try and ‘outperform’ the joints.  That way injury lies!

The core also gets stronger, and by that we mean not just the abdominals but the back muscles, the obliques and the pelvic muscles.  You may have heard of functional fitness and this is part of the body weight philosophy, you are using lots of parts of the body to do each exercise so the fitness effect is spread across more muscle groups in each exercise.

So we have:

  • Joint Strength
  • Lean muscle improvement
  • Progression
  • Injury prevention
  • Core strength

An impressive list without mentioning that the body weight routine is a high energy burn and helps with flexibility as well.  If the lean, strong look is what you are after then this is for you. At RISE we also use body weight exercises to raise the heart rate so that precious cardio hit is still part of the workout, and you can actually see that as it is happening using our Myzone heart rate monitor system that is used at every workout.

Using the RISE app your coach can augment your twice weekly bootcamp sessions with a body weight program at home, fully digital with instructor demos at your fingertips. It means there is no excuse when you go on holiday, damn!
