Three Reasons to boost lean body mass

Three Reasons to boost lean body mass

When you think about getting fit do you always think about losing body fat? If you do, then it is time to switch up that thinking!  What you can and should be thinking about is how to increase your lean body mass.

What is Lean Body Mass

Let’s start with Wikipedia because that is what everyone else does 😉.  Lean body mass is defined as:

Lean body mass is calculated as the difference between total body weight and body fat weight, or more simply, the weight of everything except the fat.

Wikipedia

It does include all your organs and blood and so on but the thing that you can actually effect out of all that is your muscles!  Women sometimes shy away from really toning up as they think that they will somehow grow big muscles.  Fact alert!  It is quite hard to grow muscle especially with a female hormone profile. Things are changing as people start to see being physically strong as desirable and something to be proud of.

Reasons Why you should increase lean body mass

Firstly, it helps burn energy even at rest.  Your muscles have a higher energy consumption than fat, actually so do your internal organs but you can’t do much about the size of them.  But you can do something about getting your muscle mass up a bit.

Secondly, stronger is just better. Why? Because this improves functionality of everyday life tasks and makes you better at almost everything you do!  It’s like a turbo boost for the body. Did you know that in the elderly many stop living independently not because they are ill but because they lack strength to do basic tasks.

Thirdly and particularly for women, it helps boost bone health.  Women start losing bone density in their thirties and is exacerbated in the menopause.  This can lead to brittle bones and more fractures, something you definitely want to avoid.  The great news is that being more active and body weight exercise will also improve your bone density.

Burn More Calories, Get Strong, Build bones to last!

RISE Fitness

How does RISE Fitness help with all this?

RISE Fitness is right on the money to help you improve your lean body mass.  We do this through exercise by specialising in functional and body weight exercises in expertly designed programs delivered by professional trainers.  By using Y Bells and slam balls alongside the body weight exercises we get can create a huge variety of movement through every plane.

The exercise program is supplemented with our eating plan app that can guide you through a lean protein plan that helps you improve your lean body mass while exercising.

Eating lean protein and plenty of fruit and vegetables can help you change the way you eat.  Harder to snack on sugary things when you are feeling full from a protein based meal.  This can help you phase out (slowly!) things like fizzy drinks and sweets.  That doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy a treat, especially if its dark chocolate!
