Bad Habit Addict or Good Habit Angel
Bad habits are easy!
Right? What is that all about? Not many people need persuading to lie on the coach with a packet of crisps and a G & T to watch 4 episodes of Love Island on catch up…It is just not fair. But we cannot blame our poor old bods for that. Our body does lots of things for us without us even knowing it. It gets on with breathing, digesting, taking care of cuts and bruises, amazing work and we just take it for granted.
What is your thought process?
Bring the conscious mind into it and things become a whole lot more complicated. We know that we should eat more vegetables because they are good for us but our desire to eat a doughnut can get in the way! So how do we start to build a habit that’s a good one…nobody needs help with bad habits after all.
Doing something habitually is doing something constantly or regularly. This definition is important because one thing that should be accepted is that if you want to develop a good fitness habit to improve your health, please try to think of it as a permanent change.
How to form a good habit
At RISE we aim to smooth the path through those hard initial few weeks with some techniques to help you view the changes in a different way.
First of all, we understand the importance of routine, so we are here to cajole you into attending at least 2 sessions per week. Coach will be reminding you on the RISE app to get down to see her/him as you know you will feel better. This means you have made a commitment to yourself and to coach that you will make the effort to come.
The other very important piece is the education about what you are going to do and what will happen to your body over the first few weeks. Our RISE coach has a detailed discussion with you about where you are currently and what you want to do. From that you will agree a practical plan that will help you progress day by day. Here at RISE we also use heart rate monitors during the workout session and to help boost your activity when you are not under the watchful eye of Coach!
Many people lack the understanding of what their own bodies are doing and what level of effort they need to work at to get results. Using data in the session and from activity during the week we can provide that in data and feedback so that you can see the progress.
A massive help is your fellow RISERs; everybody starts somewhere and it is likely they have all been where you are and working in a group really does help with motivation. If it is enjoyable, you are more likely to stick to it. That brings us back to routine. The regular attendance will start to feel like something you want to do instead of something you have to do. Feelings of progress and accomplishment will help you push through the 3 month timescale that is thought to be the time taken to form a habit.
